At Headlands, our English curriculum is designed to empower every student to think critically, read widely, and communicate with confidence. It builds sequentially from Year 7 Year 13, ensuring that students not only achieve success at GCSE and A level, but also develop the powerful reading, writing, and oracy skills needed to flourish in higher education, employment, and life.
From their very first lessons, students are immersed in a broad and engaging range of literature – from global voices to canonical classics – using story, argument, and language as lenses through which to explore identity, power, and the human experience. The curriculum celebrates diversity, creativity, and the joy of expression, helping students understand both themselves and the world around them.
Lessons are carefully sequenced and designed to build mastery of key concepts: metaphor, story, argument, pattern, context, grammar, and oracy. These strands are revisited and deepened over time, ensuring that every student – regardless of starting point – develops the knowledge and confidence to read critically, write with purpose, and speak with clarity. All mainstream students study both GCSE English Language and English Literature, with teaching that combines rigour, creativity, and care. Our team of experienced subject specialists work collaboratively to ensure high expectations, responsive teaching, and rich opportunities for discussion, performance, and debate.
Within the ARC (Enhanced Resource Provision), our English curriculum mirrors the ambition and breadth of the whole-school offer, while providing additional structure, scaffolding, and support to ensure every learner experiences success. Students study a carefully adapted version of the 7-Year English Curriculum, using high-quality texts to build reading fluency, vocabulary, and confidence in speaking and writing. Lessons are sequenced to revisit the same key concepts – metaphor, story, argument, pattern, context, grammar, and oracy – through accessible, engaging material that connects to students’ lived experiences. The curriculum prepares students to achieve success in their GCSE English Language qualification, while developing the communication, comprehension, and life skills that underpin independence and future employability.
Success in English at Headlands is measured not only in excellent outcomes, but in the confidence with which our students interpret complex ideas, express original thought, and engage with the world as articulate, curious, and compassionate individuals.
